The Rački Ribniki-Požeg Landscape Park, located near the Ljubljana–Maribor highway and railway, has the perfect location and resources for the development of ecotourism. The park has gained many visitors through the years thanks to its basic infrastructure – three footpaths, an observation tower, and plenty of promotional material.
This year, we have marked another trail through the Landscape Park, which is dedicated to the forest, the park’s most prevalent feature. The circular trail begins at the crossroads that leads towards the Turn Ponds, near the Rače Hunting Lodge. At first it follows along the road, then it goes around the lower pond, Turntajht. It is marked with signposts, so anyone can travel along the road without the fear of getting lost. At the start of the trail there is an information board with a trail map. If you happen to arrive by bicycle, you can leave it in the lovely bike stand there. An insect hotel is also located here. You will be able to learn more about it on the trail itself. Along your way around the Turn Ponds, you will get to know the numerous forest birds and trees found there. By the way, be on the lookout for marked trees and a woodpile. The wood found there is not meant for heating but for learning about the different tree species found growing here. You will also see and hear about the resin extraction process. Resin has been extracted here since before World War II and continued for a number of years after it. The extracted resin was bought by and then processed in the factory in Rače which was later renamed Pinus.
The new trail was made possible by the collaboration between the Municipality of Rače-Fram, the project leader and field expert Milan Vogrin, and the trail guide Roman Hergan.
Below is a highlight reel of photos taken during the planning stage and the trail’s opening day on 15 June 2014, when the first steps on the new trail were taken as part of the traditional hike through the landscape park.
