andrejam.plecko@gmail.comThe Plečko Farm is located in the Podova settlement. Most of the work on a medium-sized farm is done by the Plečko couple, while their daughters help them out. Their main focuses are animal husbandry and agronomy. The Plečko family is an advocate for natural, environmentally, and human friendly food production. They are aware that sprays and fertilizers are harmful for our environment, and for this reason they substituted conventional production for integrated one and entered the control system. The Plečko Farm offers a wide selection. Their array includes not only agricultural products but also their home-made baked goods and delicacies, which are available for purchase at their home or on the marketplace.
To gain new knowledge, which they use to improve their production and processing of their products, they attend various trainings and courses.

A family run Garden Centre Plečko has been operating since 1950, when Franc Plečko began his studies, in the garden centre Urbanek in the city of Maribor, to become a gardener. At the time, the Garden Centre was located between the castle and Vrtna ulica, however, since 1965 it can be found at Grajski trg 11 in Rače. Their first seedlings were tobacco seedlings. Over the past few years, they have been mostly focused on raising vegetable seedlings and growing vegetables. All of the seedlings and vegetables are produced in an environmentally friendly manner, without the use of pesticides, using exclusively organic fertilizers, such as barn manure and compost. The greenhouses are heated with the renewable energy sources like firewood, and the hotbeds with fresh horse manure.
All of their seedlings and products are available for purchase at the Plečko family’s home, in their Garden Centre, and on the marketplace in Rače.

hergan.franc@amis.net Franc Hergan, who was inspired by his father, has been engaged in beekeeping activity for 16 years now. He is the president of the Beekeeping Association Rače, which was established in 1933 and has 24 members. At Mr Hergan’s home you can visit a fascinating beekeeping museum, which holds some of the beekeeping tools, such as over 200-years-old honey extractor, the old-fashioned straw beehives, and other beekeeping equipment that was used by our ancestors. In his extraction room, you can take a closer look at the latest technology used for honey extraction and production. Beekeeping Hergan produces Slovenian honey with a protected geographical indication status, which guarantees a higher quality, authentic taste and flavour. Protected honey is completely natural and free of additives. Mr Hergan is striving for more beekeepers in his area to get the protected geographical indication status at the European level. Mr Hergan received the Anton Janša award, the most prestigious beekeeping award in Slovenia. The Municipality of Rače-Fram has also awarded him a special achievement award and a gold plaque.
SLOVENIAN HONEY?PROTECTED IN EUROPESlovenian honey with a Protected Geographical Indication is our country’s specialty. It is produced only in Slovenia, and it stands out with its taste, scent and flavour. The protected name guarantees that customers purchase a natural, authentic honey which was produced in Slovenia, and that it meets all the criteria prescribed by the applicable legislation, Slovenian Rules on Honey, and other rules in force. After years of trying, in November 2013 the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association and Slovenian beekeepers finally achieved that Slovenian honey now has the Protected Geographical Indication status at the European level. This is an important contribution to Slovenian identity preservation. Slovenian honey is the only protected Slovenian product that carries Slovenian in its name.

Herbalism is Peter Lep’s hobby. He learned about it by reading literature written by various authors, and by consulting other herbalists. He would like to improve his knowledge on essential oils, so he could add them to his array of products. He grows many different herbs at home, even those that are hard to find, such as speedwell, garden angelica, milk thistle, fennel, common mallow, etc.
Antibiotics are very harmful for our intestinal flora, but sometimes it is impossible to avoid them. Phytotherapeutical methods are used to help your body fight infections, cleanse it, and to improve your immune system. It is up to us to decide to start using phytotherapy as an alternative to Western medicine.
Peter Lep wants everyone to be healthy. He is available for individual consultations by phone, at his home or at the Castle market.

Comments about the poor self-sufficiency and food production in Slovenia motivated Barbara Petrič, from the farm in the Brezula settlement, to start growing her own seasonal vegetables and raising flowers for pleasure. All the vegetables on the farm are produced in an integrated, environmentally, and nature-friendly manner. All production is based on the selection of quality seedlings of traditional Slovenian plants. Barbara has a very successful pickled vegetable production, as well. Its quality was confirmed by golden certificate, which she received at a national competition which was a part of the culinary event Specialties of Slovene Farms that was held in the city of Ptuj.
Having a joy of work, diligence, knowledge, and quality are all Barbara’s virtues. She is especially proud of her gladioli, perennials, and flower arrangements made of natural materials.
